In the upper part of our valley, beech forests dominate the slopes of the mountain range, giving the entire mountain range its name, the “Sierra del Hayedo de Santiago”. Among the many valleys that comprise it, the area where the Vargas River rises is known as the Monte Real beech forest.
To enjoy this area, we recommend climbing from Ajamil along a trail to the Pradito Gil refuge. The trail is generally in good condition from spring to winter, making it a very beautiful walk through the beech trees.
Along the way, we’ll find several rest areas with tables by the river, as well as waterfalls, rapids, and pools, and finally, we’ll reach the refuge. This is a small cabin where you can take shelter if the weather is bad or take the opportunity to build a bonfire (not permitted during fire season).
In this area, there are several hiking trails for all levels, from simple walks along good trails to long, all-day hikes. The dominant landscape in all of them is beech forests and ravines with beautiful waterfalls.
This is a perfect area to enjoy its waterfalls in spring, the cool air, pools, and shade in summer, and the colors of the leaves in autumn. It’s just a 20-minute drive from the Mill.
